About Chris and Kate

The Gascd is Chris and Kate's album dedicated to social justice and the legal defence of protestors

Chris Brown and Kate Fenner have been making music together for half of their respective lives. Beginning in their teenage years, they founded the legendary Canadian band, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, whose well-traveled road at the end of its 10-year existence led them to New York City, where they have made music ever since.

Chris and Kate have just released GO ON, their first CD of new songs since 2001. The album - which features a full band version of Resist War - is their sixth release, others being: Other People’s Heavens (1997), Geronimo (1999), the live album, Great Lakes Bootleg (2000), O Witness (2001) and Songs (2003).

Michael Barclay, in Eye Magazine, wrote: “What sets Brown and Fenner apart from other great instrumentalists are the densely poetic and literate lyrics, which…seamlessly place rich and disarmingly wise phrases into a smart pop song…Brown and Fenner…leave you enriched and fulfilled.”

Their first single, and debut video, Walk the Lake, was featured on Canadian radio and was shown in rotation on MuchMoreMusic. The second video Never Done, directed by Juno Award winner Sean Michael Turrell, reached the top 5 most requested videos on MuchMoreMusic, and was also played in high rotation on the TRIO Network.

During their career, Chris and Kate have not hesitated to use their musical talent to get involved in social activist causes that they value. Following the 2001 Summit of the Americas, Chris put together GASCD, a double album dedicated to educating the public on issues regarding the impact of economic globalization.

Chris and Kate's legacy of producing music also includes respective solo albums, both released in 2003: Chris' Burden of Belief and Kate's Horses and Burning Cars. The Montreal Gazette had this to say about the solo albums: "The longtime musical partners share a songwriting sensibility in which being literate and passionate aren’t mutually exclusive.” Their release was highlighted by a performance at Toronto's renowned Glenn Gould Theatre, which was recorded for national broadcast by the CBC.

Resist War was first recorded and mixed on January 8/9, 2003 at Tony Scherr's recording studio in Brooklyn.  Tony - a multi-instrumentalist - also played guitar on the song.
